  • 🔴 头灯 ×2;🔴 淋浴代币/quarter(Mather、KOA 都投币)

但谷底 7月底 105–120°F(Phantom Ranch 记录过120°F)。
③ 沙漠开车高温(Mojave/Needles)。

⚠️ Camp Mode draws power: sleeping with A/C runs about 10–15%/night, more in the desert. Don't go below 40% before sleeping. Campgrounds (Mather/KOA) may not have EV charging, so charge up during the day at Tusayan / the Visitor Center. Bring a CCS adapter as a backup for Electrify America.

🏕️ Camping & bookings

⚠️ Book now! Mather Campground is in high demand in peak season (Mar–Nov); sites open 6 months ahead and are likely already full. Check recreation.gov for 7/29 and 7/30 immediately; if full, set a cancellation alert (campnab / recreation.gov), or fall back to Ten-X. KOAs are usually easy to book.

🎒 Gear list (desert + high-country camping)

Priority: 🔴 essential · 🟡 important · ⚪ optional (carrying over the Hwy1 lessons)

Water & heat

  • 🔴 Lots of water — at least 1 gallon/person/day; dispersed sites have none, and the desert/rim are dry
  • 🔴 Sun protection: hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, light long sleeves (direct sun runs 15–20°F hotter than air temp)
  • 🔴 Window shades / reflector (the car bakes during the day)
  • 🟡 Electrolyte mix (you sweat a lot)

Camping & car-sleeping (from the Hwy1 list)

  • 🔴 Mattress, sleeping bag/quilt, pillows; 🔴 wet wipes (restrooms far, no tap at the site); 🔴 clean plastic bags (dirty clothes/trash)
  • 🔴 Headlamps ×2; 🔴 shower tokens/quarters (Mather & KOAs are coin-op)
  • 🟡 Camp stove + fuel + pot; 🟡 for BBQ bring a stove/grill grate + foil + seasoning (don't rely on the fire ring)
  • 🟡 DIY rear-AC deflector (blows up after the mattress is in); 🟡 in-car hanging organizer; 🟡 cooler + ice bags (buy ice en route)
  • ⚪ 12V car fridge (fresh food); ⚪ portable power station (Model Y has no V2L — needed to blow-dry / run devices, ≥1500W)

Charging

  • 🔴 CCS adapter (to use the in-park Electrify America fast chargers)
  • 🟡 Tesla J1772 adapter (for the Yavapai / KOA L2 chargers)

Monsoon & altitude

  • 🟡 Rain jacket (afternoon storms); 🟡 warm layer (mid-50s °F on the rim at night); 🟡 sturdy hiking shoes

🌡️ Weather & safety (very different from Hwy1)

① Deadly inner-canyon heat — rim only. The rim (~7,000 ft) is pleasant: ~84°F day, ~54°F night. But the inner canyon is 105–120°F in late July (Phantom Ranch has recorded 120°F). Do not descend far; if you go below the edge at all, do it at dawn, only a short stretch (e.g., South Kaibab to Ooh Aah Point, 0.9 mi round trip), and turn back. Carry plenty of water.
② Monsoon thunderstorms + flash floods. Mid-July to early September, storms most afternoons ~11 AM–6 PM: lightning, downpours, flash floods. Hear thunder / see lightning → leave the viewpoints and get into a hard-topped car (not under trees / shelters). Keep viewpoints and hikes to the morning.
③ Desert driving heat (Mojave/Needles). 105–115°F in early August. Cross the desert stretch in the early morning or evening, and don't overnight in Needles; pre-cool the battery, watch consumption (A/C is thirsty), carry plenty of water, and don't sit exposed if you break down.
Also: the rim has no guardrails in many places — stay back, watch kids; altitude + dryness dehydrate you fast, so slow down and drink; don't feed or approach wildlife (deer, squirrels, California condors).
