Pilot / Love's / TA

(Jersey City Heights = Zone 16)

第一周访客证 $5/24h(Parking Enforcement 办公室领);周日免费。

🐢 巡航 68–70 mph(代替 78–80):能耗从 ~0.30 降到 ~0.23 kWh/mi−$150–180每天多 ~1h(挑平直无聊的大平原日用)

  • 🗺️ 手机装 iOverlander + Campendium(睡点)· Trucker Path(全美卡车站+车位实时满员度+哪家有淋浴)· AllStays Walmart Overnight(~$3,哪家沃尔玛允许过夜的权威库)· Pilot/Love's app(淋浴排队/手机付)· PlugShare(备用桩)

🎯 The shape of the trip

One person, one Model Y, FSD on the wheel, Starlink for the evenings. Out on the I-70 central line (Salt Lake → the Rockies → Kansas → St. Louis → Pittsburgh), back on the I-40 southern line / Route 66 (Nashville → Memphis → New Mexico → the Grand Canyon → the Mojave). The old Kia did the I-90 northern line — after this loop, all three great crossings are yours, nothing repeated.

The model is the trucker's model with a better bed: meals = Supercharging, drowsiness = naps at the plug, nights = truck stop / Walmart / campground rotation. FSD holds the wheel; you hold the judgment.

Why the crazy idea is actually sound: ① you've slept in this car for 2+ weeks and own real Camp Mode telemetry; ② the 2026 Supercharger network has zero gaps on I-70/I-40; ③ August on the central+high-plateau lines means nights mostly ≤21°C; ④ every single day is reversible — the network is symmetric, nothing commits you.

📊 The three big questions, one line each (details per tab)

QuestionAnswer
🚿 Showers?Planet Fitness Black Card (~$28/mo, 2,600+ clubs, unlimited showers) + truck-stop showers ($16–20, shockingly clean) + powered-camp nights include them. Every other day, painless.
💰 Cost?~$1,500 ±300 total: charging ~$780 + food ~$290 + sleep ~$200 + tolls/misc ~$150 + showers ~$100. (A round-trip flight is ~$300–450 — the difference buys 6,600 miles of America.)
🤔 Realistic?Yes — and most nights need no booking at all. Heat is solved by routing (central out, high plateau back) + AC nights at powered camps; sleeping is the truck-stop/Walmart/campground rotation — sleeping with the trucks is a completely normal, legal American institution. See ⚠️.

WhenDo
Night beforeTomorrow's line: 3 Superchargers + sleep town + backup spot (scouted on iOverlander) · hot night forecast? → book a hookup site
5:30Up · kit stowed · tire-pressure glance · location pin to Cassie
Every chargeEat / stretch / refill water · drowsiness self-score: ≥3/10 → add a 20-min Camp Mode nap
~15:00Lock tonight's sleep spot (never hunt in the dark) · check where the shower is
19:30Parked · dinner · 5 min on tomorrow · goodnight pin to Cassie · asleep 21:30
Three iron laws (a contract with yourself): ① drowsy at any moment — next exit, stop; FSD supervises the road, not your sleep; ② no driving after 20:30 (single exception: the planned Mojave evening crossing); ③ ≤11 h wheel time/day, and two 11-h days in a row force a ≤6-h short day third.

🥡 The food system: no cooking — cold chain + multithreading (settled 8/7)

Principle: every meal nests inside a charge stop; net time spent eating = 0. No flames on the crossing (the stove rides along for NJ weekend camp dinners with Cassie).
WhatHow
🥚 Pre-departure batch prepSaturday's own kitchen: braised/boiled eggs ×12 · braised chicken thighs / 卤味 · washed fruit · cucumber-carrot sticks — onto fresh ice Sunday morning
🍗 The rotisserie moveWalmart/Costco beside the Supercharger: a $5–7 hot whole chicken — eat half on the spot, box the rest = tomorrow's lunch. One every 2 days: zero cooking, real food
🍜 The thermos replaces the stoveFree boiling water at any truck-stop coffee counter in the morning → hot cup noodles at noon, no flame, no table. Two thermoses = lunch + afternoon tea
🥜 The ambient base layerTortillas · nut butter · jerky · nuts · bananas · a brick of instant noodles
🌡️ Safety linesCooked food 3–4 days max · unpeeled boiled eggs ~1 week · thermometer ≤4°C · re-ice every ~2 days (= the grocery cadence anyway) · post-hot-day doubts go in the trash
🚨 The leftovers rule (learned 8/12)Restaurant leftovers go into the cooler within the hour — or don't box them at all. Over 2 h in a warm car (1 h above 32°C) is the danger zone; S. aureus / B. cereus make heat-stable toxins — reheating kills bacteria, not poison, and the food looks, smells and tastes fine. Solo + sleeping in the car + mountain passes multiplies the cost of one bad meal beyond any leftover's worth. (A 15–18-hour taco was binned under this rule.)

💻 The passenger-seat workstation (lap table + Claude Code) — one hard line

While the car moves, the laptop is a worker, not a screen. Hands and eyes touch it only when parked. Three hard reasons: ① FSD's cabin camera catches repeated glances at the passenger seat → forced disengagements → enough strikes suspends FSD for a week — the trip's core tool confiscated in mid-Kansas; ② a visible laptop from the driver's seat = distracted-driving law in most states, and CA plates crossing eight of them are exactly who gets stopped; ③ you're already fighting drowsiness 10 h/day — don't open a second front.

The safe workflow (~90% of the output, 0% of the risk): every charge stop (3–4×/day, 20–30 min) = a standup: review what Claude finished → assign the next batch of long-running tasks (refactors, research, builds, repo chores) → lid closed, roll. It grinds in the background while you drive (tethered hotspot works fine along the interstates; the Mini stays packed in motion). Strap the table + laptop down — a loose slab is a projectile under hard braking; a seatbelt through the table legs does it.

Effectively four 25-minute standups a day with your agent — frankly a better management cadence than most tech leads keep.

🚚 Truck stops
Pilot / Love's / TA
FREEExactly your "sleeping with the trucks" — normal, welcomed, tens of thousands do it nightly. Park the car section (never a truck bay), buying a snack is the etiquette. 24 h lights + people + restrooms + hot food + showers in the buildingReefer trucks hum all night — earplugs. Take an edge spot
🛒 Walmart lotsFREERoughly half allow overnighting (manager + city ordinance). Ask at the service desk / check the app. Park the perimeter, nothing outside the car, in late out early. Store closed ≠ lot closed: overnighting happens during closed hours by definition — read the driveway signs ("No Overnight Parking" placards) + whether other RVs/rigs are already sleeping at the edge (present = tolerated). Worst case ever = a knock and a polite move-alongRefused = next tier, never squat; uncertain = go straight to the truck stop (24/7, never closes, zero ambiguity)
🅿️ Interstate rest areasFREENV/UT/CO/NM/AZ/KS/OK/MO broadly allow or tolerate in-vehicle rest; eastern states often time-limitedCA caps at 8 h; "sleeping" OK, "camping" (stuff outside) not
🌵 BLM / NF dispersedFREE + starsThe western bonus: NV exits, Utah's San Rafael Swell (roadside on I-70, world-class), Coconino NF around Flagstaff. Find via iOverlanderBasically nonexistent east of the Mississippi
🏕️ Powered campgrounds (30A)
KOA / state parks
$30–50 (posted price is truth)The every-2–3-nights "full-restore night": TT-30 trickle to 100% overnight + hot shower + laundry + legal quiet. Hot nights (≥22°C) go here by design — the AC runs on shore power, not your packWeekdays book same-day easily; weekends 1–2 days ahead
Pre-book the whole route? No. Of 15 nights only two kinds need booking ahead: the Grand Canyon-gateway night (Williams/Tusayan, ~2 days out) and anything landing on a Fri/Sat at a destination park. Everything else is decided at 15:00 same-day — midweek Plains/Southern camps and truck stops always have room. This is the solo-small-car privilege.

Cadence: a real shower every other day (PF / truck stop / camp), wipes between. Same system as the Tahoe week — just with more options, not fewer.

🗽 The NY week: where the car lives (Jersey City Heights = Zone 16)

DurationPlanCost
Week oneGuest passes, $5/24 h (Parking Enforcement office); Sundays free. Zone 16 caps unpermitted cars at 4 h, enforced 24 h × 6 days — the strictest zone in JC; never park naked~$30/wk
Staying 1–2 monthsCall about the resident permit ($15/YEAR!) — living there is residency, but CA plates + a sublet = ask what docs they'll take; if no → rent a private driveway (Spacer/Neighbor-type apps, ~$100–200/mo, prioritize listings with an outdoor outlet: parking + trickle charging solved in one); else → Journal Square monthly lot ~$150–250 (10-min walk)$15–250/mo

Parked-car care: Starlink/boat/cooler all move upstairs (an empty car is a boring car) · long stays run Sentry OFF (8–12%/day is unpayable without a plug; vampire-only is 1–2%/day = a full pack coasts 6+ weeks) · top-ups: Newport Centre Supercharger, 20 stalls (30 Mall Dr W) · glance at the app weekly. Prices checked 8/7; posted/checkout is truth.

🔐 Solo overnight safety rules

  • Gut rule #1: feels wrong = drive on — the accelerator is the security system; there is always another stop.
  • Park lit-but-not-floodlit, nose toward the exit.
  • Doors locked; keys/phone/water at the bed; shades up as usual (an occupied car at a truck stop is the most normal thing in America — no need to hide).
  • Sentry: OFF while sleeping inside (you are the alarm, and reefer trucks would fire it all night); ON when away at stores/sights by day.
  • Nightly pin to Cassie (fixed ritual); the time zones cooperate: your 21:30 = her 00:30, morning check-ins align.
  • $100 cash split in two places; documents photographed to the cloud.

💰 Trip budget (estimated 8/6 · every price defers to the pump/checkout/car screen)

~$1,500 ±300 · 6,600 mi · 21 days

⚡ Charging ~1,850 kWh × ~$0.42/kWh Supercharger average — car screen is the truth; hookup nights shave it $780 🍳 Food Cooler + stove self-catering ~$18/day × 16 driving days; restaurant days extra $290 🛏️ Sleep ~10 free nights + ~5 hookup nights × $40 $200 🛂 Tolls/misc Eastern tolls (I-78/PA Turnpike/NYC crossings ~$60–90) + misc $150 🚿 Showers One month of PF Black Card + 2–3 truck-stop showers $100 Compare: round-trip flight ~$300–450 — the difference buys 6,600 miles of America + total gear freedom

Hover/long-press bars for the assumptions. Charging is the biggest and most steerable line: every hookup night's overnight trickle (bundled in the site fee) replaces ~$25 of Supercharging — 5 nights ≈ $100+ saved.

⚡ Charging strategy

  • Daytime: Superchargers only, riding the 10–60% fast band, every 180–250 mi, all stacked on meals/naps.
  • Hookup nights: TT-30 trickle — wake at 100% and skip the day's first stop. The most underrated money-and-time move of the trip.
  • Free municipal L2 (libraries/malls) via the J1772 adapter — only when it's already where you are; never detour for slow electrons.
  • Real-world 75–80 mph consumption ~0.28 kWh/mi (your own July telemetry, interstate-adjusted). Headwind/climb days: +15% margin.
  • The old iron rule stands: ≥40% at bedtime (hot AC nights budgeted at 10–18%); charge to 90% before the Mojave.

✂️ Cheap mode: cutting $780 to ~$400–450

MoveSavesCosts
Big charges off-peak only: many Superchargers price by time — ~$0.25–0.30 before 9–10 AM / after 9 PM vs $0.45+ midday (per-site on the car screen). A 5:30 wake-up = born off-peak: big morning charge, midday splash, evening top-up if parked near stalls−$180–220nothing
🐢 Cruise 68–70 mph (vs 78–80): consumption drops ~0.30 → ~0.23 kWh/mi−$150–180~1 h/day (spend it on the flat boring Plains days)
🔌 Free-electron scavenging: PlugShare's "free" filter (municipal/libraries/malls) · casinos = free L2 + overnight + cheap food · Cracker Barrel = charger + dinner + overnight in one — stacked only on stops already happening; never a detour−$80–120nothing (J1772 adapter aboard)
🌙 Feed the car every night: hookup nights = full pack bundled in the site fee · the NY week parks near a wall outlet — 110 V quietly fills the whole pack over six days; the return's first charge is free−$50–80nothing

Net: charging ~$780 → ~$400–450; trip total → ~$1,100–1,150. Not worth doing: CCS adapter + third-party memberships for the rates (won't break even in one trip), detours for free plugs (time is the scarcest thing aboard), or cutting the hot-night hookup camps (that $40 buys sleep quality = the actual safety budget).

🌡️ How hot is August really? — night lows are what matter (days have AC)

Average August night lows (NOAA climate normals, °C). ≤21°C = comfortable Camp Mode · >21°C = "AC night" → hookup camp / truck stop

🚓 20-state rules cheat sheet (checked 8/8 · posted signs / current statutes are the truth)

One doctrine: drive every state like California — phone always mounted, never in hand, single-tap max, voice for the rest. 15 of 20 states ban handheld outright; driving to the strictest standard means never tracking state lines.
QuestionAnswer
Touch the car's screen?✅ Legal in all 20 (laws target handheld portables). Forums: ~zero tickets in 5+ years; but visibly menu-diving can draw careless-driving catch-alls + FSD strikes — quick taps yes, deep menus wait for charge stops
Switch podcasts?Car media tab ✅ · mounted phone single tap ✅ (CA 23123.5's explicit rule) · picking it up to scroll ❌ = a ticket in 15 states. Queue playlists while charging
Phone at red lights?stopped in traffic = still driving (the #1 misconception; CHP stakes out intersections). Parked at a Supercharger = free use
Tesla "eyes-off" texting features?the car allowing it ≠ the law allowing it — state statutes outrank Tesla software

State hot spots: CO/PA = brand-new laws (PA's grace period just ended = eager enforcement) · NJ/NY = the country's heaviest phone enforcement · NM has no state ban BUT Albuquerque + Gallup city bans — both ON I-40 · TX/OK/AR ban handheld in school/work zones · KS is texting-only but keeps catch-alls. The other four rules that matter: ① Move Over (all 50 states: lights on the shoulder = change lanes or slow hard — the #1 tourist ticket) ② no left-lane camping (KS/CO/NJ enforce) ③ speed bands: 80 mph zones in NV/UT, 75 Plains/Southwest, 70 Midwest/East, 65 NJ — FSD at limit+5, exact limit in work zones ④ CA agricultural inspection coming home (Needles): finish the fruit in Arizona 😄. Tolls: KS/PA/NJ bill the plate by mail (PA's plate rate stings; one round trip, accept it).

⚖️ The honest risk table

RiskHow realCounter
😴 Solo fatigue (the one big real risk)🔴 High — FSD makes it easy to underestimateThe three iron laws + the fixed afternoon nap + the drowsiness self-score. ⚡ Charger queues / dead stalls🟢 Low (I-70/I-40 trunk density is high in 2026)Car reroutes live; the optional $180 CCS adapter adds another layer
🚗 Flat / mechanical🟡 Low-mediumSealant + pump aboard; Tesla roadside covers the whole country; morning tire-pressure glance
😢 Loneliness / missing her🟡 Genuinely realPodcasts/audiobooks queued deep · the nightly pin ritual · Starlink video calls from camp · and: any day it stops being fun, the road home is the same road — zero sunk cost
Overall verdict: realistic, executable, and exit-optional the entire way. This isn't an endurance stunt — it's the car-living system you already validated, switched from "base-camp mode" to "trucker-cruise mode." The hard parts (sleeping aboard, managing electrons, finding showers) are exactly what July and this week already trained.

🛠️ Before departure (this week)

  • 💪 Join Planet Fitness Black Card (the any-club tier) — and star the clubs along both routes in the app
  • 🔌 Confirm the TT-30 adapter is aboard (the key to hookup nights) + the J1772 adapter
  • 🗺️ Install iOverlander + Campendium (sleep spots) · Trucker Path (every US truck stop + live lot fullness + which have showers) · AllStays Walmart Overnight (~$3, the authoritative which-Walmarts-allow-it database) · Pilot/Love's apps (shower queues / pay by phone) · PlugShare (backup plugs)
  • 🧊 The cooler returns to duty: thermometer still inside · day-1 ice bought at departure
  • 📦 Subtract from the Tahoe loadout: tide kit / two-person redundancy stays home — a solo cruise wants an empty trunk and a good bed
  • 🛞 Tires: pressure + tread check · sealant + pump confirmed · washer fluid full
  • 💵 ~$100 cash (small camps/laundry still eat it) + a fistful of quarters
  • 🛰️ Starlink Mini + the white-bucket shade rig (evening camp entertainment / video calls)
  • 📅 Book the Grand Canyon night (return D7, Williams/Tusayan) ~2 days out — the trip's only mandatory booking
  • 🚗 FSD updated to latest · a pre-trip Service self-check pass
  • 🥚 Saturday batch prep: braised/boiled eggs ×12 · braised chicken thighs · fruit washed & cut · thermoses ×2 (boiling water = the flameless noodle stove)
  • 💻 Test the lap-table + laptop tie-down once (seatbelt through the legs) · confirm the phone hotspot carries the laptop

📦 Load zones (principle: the bed stays made, and stays empty)

ZoneContents
🧳 FrunkCharging trio (Mobile Connector/TT-30/J1772) · sealant + compressor · tool roll · washer fluid — heavy, rare, heat-proof
🕳️ Sub-trunk (under the bed's foot)Weekly-access tier: cassette stove (empty — buy canisters at an NJ Asian market, $2/can; never ferry butane across the desert) · boat + pump + PFDs · laundry bag. Daily items banned
👣 Rear footwells (the void under the bed's head)Soft clothing duffels (they level the bed) + the 7-gal water jug (26 kg: lowest point, centered, wedged)
🦶 Front passenger footwellThe cooler — 3 daily openings all happen from the passenger door at stops; AC wash helps the ice while driving
💺 Passenger seatLap table + laptop (belted) + the day bag (passport/immigration docs/half the cash — it walks with you EVERY time you leave the car)
🚪 Doors/consoleCables · PD charger · wipes · headlamp · quarters
🎒 Driver seat-back pocketStarlink Mini + bucket shade — evening deploy without unpacking anything
🛏️ The bedAlways empty — under hard braking, anything on the bed is aimed at the back of your head

🦀 Tide-foraging kit: bring the small core (bucket/net/hand rake/gloves — fits the well). The East's version is blue crabbing (peak season Aug–Sep! chicken neck + string + net, Barnegat Bay / Sandy Hook bayside) + clamming (NJ shellfish license ~$10–20, approved DEP waters only; NY is town-resident permits — skip). West-specific gear stays home.

🌅 60 seconds before rolling, daily

  • 🔋 Charge vs first leg ✓ · no tire warnings ✓

  • 💧 ≥2 L water in reach · snacks · caffeine inventory

🔐 Iron laws (memorize)

  • Drowsy = next exit, unconditionally
  • No driving after 20:30 (except the planned Mojave leg)
  • ≥40% at bedtime · hot nights budgeted at −15%
  • A lot that feels wrong = leave immediately
  • Nightly pin to Cassie · morning check-in back

Estimates and checks dated 2026-08-06; every price defers to the pump/checkout/car screen:

[1] Supercharger pricing: $0.35–0.55/kWh across the country (site/time varies); budget uses ~$0.42 — the car's screen is the only real price. Consumption 0.28 kWh/mi extrapolated from your own July/Tahoe telemetry to 75–80 mph.

[2] Planet Fitness: Black Card (any-club tier) ~$26–30/mo + possible join fee, site checked 8/6 — checkout page is truth; 2,600+ clubs per their public count. Truck-stop showers $16–20 = posted Pilot/Love's 2026 range.

[3] Overnighting: truck stops = industry-standard welcome; Walmart = manager + city-ordinance discretion (~half allow; AllStays-app consensus); rest areas = each state DOT's rules (CA caps 8 h; most western states allow in-vehicle rest). Posted signs are the truth on the ground.

[4] Night temps: NOAA August climate normals (city means, rounded °C) — replace with real forecasts nightly en route.

[5] Camps: KOA/state-park $30–50 posted range (30A sites); same-day weekday availability is the norm mid-country; Canyon gateways excepted.

[6] Mileage: Google Maps pulls 8/6, rounded to 10 mi; the old Kia I-90 map (11 days / ~3,100 mi / 48 h) is Ray's own itinerary graphic — both new lines share zero overlap with it. Charger coverage: full supercharge.info DB (10,850 sites / 3,188 open US) pulled 8/7, gap analysis on a 15-mi corridor buffer — outbound 361 sites / max gap 148 mi, return 257 sites / max 123 mi.

[7] FSD sunglasses/attention: 2026.14.6.7 improved eyewear handling (checked 8/2, see the Tahoe log) — sunglasses fine, drowsiness detection weakened, hence the iron laws.
